OFF-BROADWAY HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
PART TWO: CDS

Blog posted Saturday, December 5, 2009

Experience six very different Off-Broadway musicals of recent vintage, all released on CD in 2009.   Though several of these shows have closed, their music will live forever thanks to these fantastic recordings.
FIVE COURSE LOVE

If music be the food of love, musicals about food are even better! Five Course Love, with music, lyrics and book by Gregg Coffin premiered at the Minetta Lane Theatre in 2005 and has just been released on CD. The show features five short musicals which depict five entangled encounters with love in five different restaurants. Three actors play fifteen different characters, all on the hunt for one true Love.

THE GLORIOUS ONES: A NEW MUSICAL

Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, currently represented with a Broadway revival of Ragtime, created a valentine to theatre with The Glorious Ones, centered around a commedia dell’arte troupe in 17th century Venice. This sumptuous score, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theatre’s Newhouse in fall 2007, features several of the most stunning show tunes of recent years, including “My Body Wasn’t Why: and “I Was Here.”

GUTENBERG! THE MUSICAL!

From the sublime to the ridiculous: a pair of hapless songwriters (hilariously performed by Jeremy Shamos and Christopher Fitzgerald) pitch a musical very, very, very loosely based on the life of the printing press inventor in Gutenberg! The Musical!

ROAD SHOW

The premiere of a new Stephen Sondheim musical is always cause for celebration, and the spring 2009 bow of Road Show at the Public Theater was no exception. Spanning 40 years, from the Alaskan Gold Rush to the Florida real estate boom in the 1930s, Road Show is the story of two brothers whose quest for the American dream turns into a test of morality and judgment that changes their lives in unexpected ways.

THE TOXIC AVENGER MUSICAL

Since its bow earlier this spring at New World Stages, this musical about new Jersey's first superhero has left audiences laughing as The Toxic Avenger rocks the house and saves the Earth for all mankind. The Outer Critics Circle Award-Winner for Best Off-Broadway Musical features music by Bon Jovi's David Bryan, lyrics and book by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.

VANITIES, A NEW MUSICAL

The newest recording of the bunch comes courtesy of Second Stage Theatre’s production earlier this season. The tuneful, song-filled adaptation of Jack Heifner’s hit Off-Broadway play depicted three friends (Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles, Anneliese van der Pol) and their journey through several turbulent decades. Scheduled to be released on December 15, and now available for pre-order.
