Happy 2010, Off-Broadway fans! We hope your resolutions are going well, and that you're attacking the treadmill (and the holiday weight gain) with fervor. If your resolutions include spending more time enjoying New York's theatre scene, may we suggest the following shows, all opening this month.
THE ACCIDENTAL PERVERT
The story of one boy's odyssey to manhood via a childhood dominated by pornography, an addiction accumulated after the boy happens upon his father's collection of XXX-Rated video tapes. Andrew Goffman takes his audience on a hilarious and self-deprecating journey into a world of video vixens, X-Rated fantasies, and really DIRTY movies with no redeeming value whatsoever. Players Theatre. Now in previews, opens January 23.
AGES OF THE MOON
Byron and Ames are old friends, re-united by mutual desperation. Over bourbon on ice, they sit, reflect and bicker until fifty years of love, friendship and rivalry are put to the test at the barrel of a gun. Seán McGinley and Stephen Rea star in a gruff, poignant and funny new play by Sam Shepard. Atlantic Theater Company. Previews begin January 12, opens January 27, closes March 7.
THE ORPHANS' HOME CYCLE PART THREE: THE STORY OF A FAMILY
Horton Foote’s nine-play saga about Horace Robedaux of Harrison, Texas continues with Part Three: The Story of a Family which consists of the plays 1918, Cousins, and The Death of Papa, and begins previews on January 7 for a January 26 opening. Signature Theatre at The Peter Norton Space. All three parts run in repertory through March 28, 2010.
SMUDGE
The world premiere of a dark comedy about the changing face of the American family and the limits of love and cheesecake, as a hopeful young couple gives birth to a smudge. The Women’s Project at the Julia Miles Theatre. Previews begin January 3, opens January 11, closes February 7.
VENUS IN FUR
Inspired by the infamous erotic novel of the same name, VENUS IN FUR takes us behind the scenes of an audition, where a man and a woman blur the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex. A crackling exploration of sexual control and desire, the play is captive to David Ives’ famous combination of classic rigor and contemporary wit.
