The ceremony will be held on Sunday May 2 at 8pm at Terminal 5, 610 West 56th Street. Joining previously announced hosts Bryan Batt (TV’s “Mad Men” and “Ugly Betty”) and Bebe Neuwirth (Emmy-winner and Tony Award-winner currently appearing in The Addams Family), are a number of performers and writers who originally made their names Off-Broadway.
Alan Menken, the composer behind many of Disney’s beloved animated classics, scored a triumph early in his career with Off-Broadway's Little Shop of Horrors, and now comes home to perform a medley of tunes from the show. Before she won a Tony for The Color Purple, LaChanze won hearts as the heroine of Once on This Island, originally produced Off-Broadway. At this year’s Lortel Awards, she’ll perform the musical’s signature tune, “Waiting for Life.” Audiences can also expect a hilariously dishy routine by comedian Seth Rudetsky deconstructing Off-Broadway and the seminal hit that began life at The Public Theatre, A Chorus Line.
Current shows are getting in the act, too, with an electrifying percussive performance from STOMP!, and a performance of “Try To Remember” from The Fantasticks, that age-defying Off-Broadway hit from 1960. Librettist/lyricist Tom Jones will be on hand to present the Lortel Award for the 2009-2010 season’s “Outstanding Musical.”
Other presenters include luminaries from the worlds of film, theatre, television, and fashion, including Justin Bartha, Saffron Burrows, Charles Busch, Keith Carradine, Hugh Dancy, Michael Esper, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Halston, Patrick Heusinger, Tom Jones, Zoe Kazan, Anthony LaPaglia, Anthony Mackie, Aasif Mandvi, Stephanie March, Laurie Metcalf, Jennifer Morrison, Rosie Perez, Lily Rabe, Ally Sheedy, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Tamara Tunie, Michael Urie, and Kerry Washington.
And of course, there are the Awards themselves. Prolific producer Daryl Roth is being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Lincoln Center Theatre will receive a special award for Outstanding Body of Work.
